Fourth Ward Park

Address: 301 N. Poplar Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 Entrances: 6th Street at Poplar, and 7th Street at Pine Run by: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, 980-314-1002 Open: Every day, daylight hours Size: About three acres (2.9 by the county's survey)

Fourth Ward Park is the green center of the neighborhood, and the place the Fourth Ward Walking Tour begins. Friends of Fourth Ward describes the neighborhood as "anchored by the soothing Fourth Ward Park."

What is there

  • A children's playground with swings
  • Walking paths
  • Fountains, including the one neighbors use as a meeting point
  • Benches and planted beds. Friends of Fourth Ward lists flowering apricot, serviceberry, Japanese maple, dogwood, buttercup bush, edgeworthia and hellebores among the plantings.
  • Public art: ceramic birdhouses by Joan Bankemper, a former McColl Center artist in residence.

The county lists the park as accessible. It has no restrooms and no parking lot of its own; see Things to Do for visitor parking.

Who keeps it up

The county maintains the park. Residents and county staff hold regular workdays to rake, mulch and plant the flower beds, and the Friends of Fourth Ward Green Team meets to pick up litter around the neighborhood. Dates are posted on the Friends of Fourth Ward calendar.

History

Part of the park was once a residential block. The 1907 Queen Anne now at 610 N. Pine Street originally stood on West 7th Street, in what is now the middle of the park, and was moved in 1976.
