Things to do in Fourth Ward
Fourth Ward is the northwest quarter of Uptown, between Trade Street, Tryon Street, Interstate 277 and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. Almost everything worth seeing is a short walk from Fourth Ward Park.
Coming up: Friends of Fourth Ward marks its 50th anniversary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 6 to 8 PM at City Club. The group's Annual Holiday Home Tour runs Friday, December 4, at 5 PM through Sunday, December 6, at 9 PM. Both are on the Fourth Ward events board. The 2026 Secret Gardens of Fourth Ward Tour ran May 16 and 17.
Walk the neighborhood
The Fourth Ward Walking Tour covers 48 stops: Victorian and Queen Anne houses, early apartment buildings, three working churches and a fourth that became an arts center, and Charlotte's oldest burial ground. Start at Stop 1, Fourth Ward Park.
Parks
Fourth Ward Park, 301 N. Poplar Street. A county neighborhood park of about three acres with fountains, a playground and walking paths, open daily during daylight. Entrances at 6th and Poplar and at 7th and Pine.
Ninth Street Park dog park, 417 W. 9th Street. A small county off-leash dog park, open daily 7:30 a.m. to sunset. Dogs need current vaccinations; no children under 12.
The historic cemeteries
Settlers', Elmwood and Pinewood are owned by the City of Charlotte and free to visit. Settlers' Cemetery, at 5th and Church, holds burials from before 1768, including Thomas Polk. Elmwood and Pinewood, entered at 700 W. 6th Street just across the railroad tracks west of the neighborhood, date to 1853 and were divided by a fence until 1969.
Houses of worship
First Presbyterian, 200 W. Trade Street; First United Methodist, 501 N. Tryon Street; and St. Peter's Episcopal, 115 W. 7th Street. All three hold public Sunday services; times are in our houses of worship guide. First United Methodist begins its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Arts and culture
McColl Center, 721 N. Tryon Street, an artist residency and free gallery in a 1926 church. Charlotte Ballet's Center for Dance, 701 N. Tryon Street, with a black box theater and free weekly community classes. Discovery Place Science, entered at 168 W. 6th Street, with an IMAX dome. Where to park and how to get here
Most residential streets are in the city's permit parking program; visitors may park there for two hours without a permit. Visitors can also use the Discovery Place Science deck at 220 W. 6th Street, at Church. The LYNX Blue Line 7th Street Station is two blocks from Discovery Place.
