Stop 19 — 316 West 9th Street
Year built: 1895 Style: Queen Anne
The 1895 Queen Anne at 316 West 9th was previously located at two other locations before being moved here in 1976. Per Friends of Fourth Ward, the house features a second-story consumption porch, has endured at least one fire, and at one time was split into two apartments. The current restoration kept the original heart-of-pine floors, doorways, and five original fireplaces.
The "consumption porch" is a period term: second-story sleeping porches were added to 19th-century homes as a public-health practice for tuberculosis ("consumption") patients, who were prescribed fresh outdoor air.
