Stop 33 — Bootlegger House

Address: 400 North Poplar Street Year built: 1895 Style: Eastlake Cottage Notable: Hidden area under foyer stairs behind wainscoting

The Bootlegger House at 400 North Poplar is an 1895 Eastlake Cottage. The name is accurate: per Friends of Fourth Ward, there is a hidden area under the foyer stairs behind the wainscoting, consistent with the house's original function as a bootlegging front.

The house was originally located on Caldwell Street and moved to its current location in the 1970s. Since then, it has been restored and modernized. The original moldings, mantles, heart-pine floors and doors remain, as do the hand-blown glass windows and most of the heart-pine siding. FOFW notes that ghosts "occasionally visit, playing harmless pranks."
