Stop 11 — 601 North Pine Street

Year built: 1894 Style: Eastlake Cottage Notable: Moved from Dilworth in 1977

The Eastlake Cottage at 601 North Pine was built by Edward Latta in 1894 — Latta was the developer behind the Dilworth neighborhood, and he built this house there to attract middle-class families. In 1977, the home was saved from demolition and moved to Fourth Ward for restoration.

The relocation of 601 N Pine is one of the clearer illustrations of the 1970s revival dynamic in Fourth Ward: historic houses slated for demolition elsewhere in Charlotte were moved block-by-block into Fourth Ward by urban-pioneer restorers. Several stops on this tour have similar origin stories (the Morrison-Lawry House at stop 8, the Torrance House at stop 29, and others).
