Willetts Construction planned The Poplar as cooperative homes. Its 39 apartments, of three to seven rooms, each had cross ventilation, an open fireplace and an unobstructed view, and the basement garage was one of Charlotte's first residential parking garages. Willetts signed its leasing contract on October 24, 1929, five days before Black Tuesday, and lost the building four months after it opened. NCNB Community Development Corporation bought it in 1978 and converted it to condominiums with SYNCO, Inc.
Location
The Poplar stands at West 10th and North Poplar streets, at the north end of the historic district.
