A 2007 high-rise condominium at the top of North Church

The Avenue (also filed as Avenue Condominiums) is the 36-story, 384-home high-rise condominium at 210 North Church Street in Historic Fourth Ward. It is one of the two tallest residential buildings in the Fourth Ward inventory — behind only The VUE Charlotte — and the largest pre-recession condominium tower that was built as condominiums and remains condominiums (VUE was built condo, converted to apartments in 2012).

Location

210 North Church sits near the southern edge of Fourth Ward's residential core, a few blocks south of 400 North Church and on the east side of the neighborhood facing North Tryon. It is the tallest condominium building in Fourth Ward not originally developed by Churchill / Westminster for VUE.

Context

The Avenue, along with The VUE, represents Fourth Ward's pre-Great-Recession high-rise condo wave. Both went up during the 2005–2010 Uptown residential boom, both were originally sold as condominiums, and both are part of the skyline the neighborhood's Victorian-era residential blocks look out at. The Avenue kept its condominium status through the downturn; VUE did not. That divergence is a useful piece of Fourth Ward's recent real-estate history.
