A 1927 apartment house, now Frederick Place condominiums
The Frederick Apartments, at 515 North Church Street, is a three-story brick apartment house built in 1927. The writer W. J. Cash lived here from 1938 to 1940 and finished The Mind of the South in the building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Mecklenburg County historic landmark. Today it is a 29-home condominium called Frederick Place.

- Built. 1927, for William Frederick Casey, by the J. A. Jones Construction Company. Who drew the plans is not known; the county's landmark history says Casey may have designed it himself.
- Original apartments. 36, in two kinds: small "bachelor apartments" and larger "housekeeping units" with kitchens.
- Homes today. 29, as the Frederick Place condominium.
- Facade. Colored terra cotta. Casey dealt in terra cotta and clay products, and the facade has no match among Charlotte buildings of its time.
W. J. Cash
Cash moved into the Frederick in 1938. He lived in Apartment 210a in 1939 and Apartment 308 in 1940, and finished The Mind of the South here. It is stop 38 on the Fourth Ward walking tour.
Location
The Frederick sits on North Church Street near the Liddell-McNinch House at 511, home of McNinch House Restaurant.
